Where Does the Weight Go?
by Liz Turner

Why does a pregnant woman need 25 to 35 pounds of extra body weight to carry a fetus that weighs less than 10 pounds? Answer: Your body is stockpiling nutrients and increasing the amount of blood and other fluids it makes to support you both. Here's a typical breakdown from the American Academy of Pediatrics:

Baby 7.5 pounds
Your breasts 2 pounds
Maternal Stores (body fat, protein and other nutrients) 7 pounds
Placenta 1.5 pounds
Uterus 2 pounds
Amniotic fluid (the water around the baby) 2 pounds
Your blood 4 pounds
Your body fluids 4 pounds
