New-Mom Slimmers

Just had a baby and can't wait to lose the pregnancy weight? Be patient with yourself, say weight-loss experts, and remember that it took you nine months to gain the weight, so it could take nine months to lose it. Here's how to safely lose the weight:

Start walking. You don't need to go to the gym to lose weight (and you don't have time anyway, right?), so start walking. Check out Walk Away Pounds: The Breakthrough 6-Week Program That Helps You Burn Fat, Tone Muscle, and Feel Great Without Dieting by Leslie Sansone (Warner Books, 2005).

Buy an exercise video or DVD. Get one designed for new mothers to follow along while the baby naps. A good choice: Melinda Bryan's Pilates After Pregnancy (DVD: $19.95; VHS: $14.95; The Pilates Studio of Los Angeles).

Eat small meals. Eating six small meals throughout the day will help keep your energy up. Try to get a good balance of vegetables, fruit, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, and lean meats. For a fun, inspirational read on the subject, look at Outsmarting the Female Fat Cell After Pregnancy: Every Woman's Guide to Shaping Up, Slimming Down, and Staying Sane After the Baby by Debra Waterhouse, M.P.H., R.D. (Hyperion 2002).
