New Placenta Teddy Bear = Gross.

OK. We’ve talked about the Breastfeeding Doll, and the Breastfeeding man, but this takes the cake. A new “placenta teddy bear” is being marketed to moms. This bear looks like it was made by Hannibal Lecter, doesn’t it? We’re about to lose our lunch!
Doing it for the Kids is a current exhibition put on by [re] design to showcase the latest, most innovative sustainable toy designs from around the globe. Among them, the Placenta Teddy Bear by designer Alex Green. A crafty alternative for those who don’t necessarily want to eat their baby’s placenta, but want to pay their respects to the life sustaining organ by turning it into a one-of-a-kind teddy bear. Green’s ‘Twin Teddy Kit’ ‘celebrates the unity of the infant, the mother and the placenta,’ and enables preparation of the placenta so it may be transformed into a teddy bear. The placenta must be cut in half and rubbed with sea salt to cure it. After it is dried out, it is treated with an emulsifying mixture of tannin and egg yolk to make it soft and pliable. Then, you craft it into a teddy bear.
Um, what are your thoughts on this?

The placenta bear looks like it’s stored in a formaldehyde jar. Is this its packaging?

Honestly…grossest thing ever! LOL!! I’m not sure…maybe it’s just me, but when I had both of my children – I didn’t even remotely think about the placenta or think about preserving it in any way, shape or form!! I had my bundles of joy, all safe and healthy in my arms and that’s all I cared about!! This is icky!!!

Just plain gross….who would want to save that? I know I wouldn’t I wouldn’t want to have that thing in my house. How would it smell after a few years?

Wait – do you craft the teddy bear yourself, or does this company do it for you? I think having this done is weird enough and a little creepy, but if you have to actually do the sewing I am really freaked out. I’m crafty, but not at all into this…

This is absolutely disgusting. I’m all for celebrating the fact that the placenta is helping my baby survive while he’s in my belly, but can’t we just give it three cheers and send it on its way to the trash? Just one look at that teddy bear was enough to get my lunch ready for a trip back up to my plate. I say a big NO THANK YOU to this.

I guess I’m the only one who doesn’t find this gross. It may not be to my tastes as I would much prefer a ritual for the placenta but I do not find it gross nor would I relegate it to the trash. I think it should be given a proper burial if you decide not to use it for postpartum recovery.

WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD WANT TO TAKE A PLACENTA HOME TO PLAY WITH?! THATS GROSS!! I dont think u can even do that because its an organ. The health department would NOT allow that!! Organs have to be tested for disease and thrown away properly!!! If I was the doctor of a woman that asked to take home the placenta, I would have their head checked and I would wonder if they were sane enough to take care of their child!! CPS anyone??!!

Wow, really? CPS if a woman wants to take her placenta home? Some women do prints of it, some bury, and some encapsulate it. I didn’t do any of those things, mine did go to medical waste, but I can’t believe that anyone would suggest taking a woman’s child away because she wants to celebrate her placenta and you think that’s weird. How many people’s children would you have snatched up out of homes, Jesica? Everyone who disagrees with you or you happen to think is weird?
About the teddy bear- hey, if it was anything that I thought looked friends or fun, I might think this was a good idea for some people. But, I agree, it doesn’t look pleasant. I do think placenta prints are cool.
