Breastfeeding Doll Coming to U.S.

The breastfeeding doll that was a hit overseas is now heading to the U.S., it’s manufacturer said in a press release last week.

The breastfeeding doll, which will retail for $90, will allow little girls (or boys!) to pretend to breastfeed the doll. The toy comes with a halter to be worn by the child, which has two flower petal sensors where the nipples would be. When the breastfeeding doll’s mouth comes close to petals, it makes a suckling sound.

The toy has been extremely successful in Spain, and the manufacturer, Berjuan, hopes to have the same success stateside. However, it hasn’t been an easy ride for the breastfeeding doll so far, and it has been met by critics who think the doll will force girls to grow up too fast.

What do you think about the breastfeeding doll? Is it a step forward, or just plain weird?

  1. I think it is a bit over the top considering that now a days the kids are growing up too fast as it is with all the media that surrounds them. This will only speed up the process. Personally I wouldn’t buy it for one of my kids. This toy has features better set for an expecting mother of her very first child or for a high school elective class.

  2. I have no problem with being open minded about things. However, I’m already having the sex talk with my 8 year old daughter, I don’t need her walking around with a plastic doll attached to her chest. I just find this doll a little inappropriate for the age group that it’s trying to market. I do agree with Elisa that this doll should be for first time expecting mothers who are wanting to breast feed or for a high school home economics class.

  3. For young children this doll is wrong on so many levels of wrongness! It’s like saying to your 3 year old heres a box of condoms go have fun… However I do like the idea stated above about the doll being used for new mothers wanting to brest feed.

  4. I fail to see how this doll would help a first-time expecting mother learn squat about breastfeeding. It doesn’t actually cry…latch…suck…it makes noises like it is sucking. It does nothing to help prepare a new mother-to-be aside from maybe proper nursing holds, which can be done with any life-sized doll.

I also fail to see how it is any more inappropriate a doll for a child than the ones that pee, poop and pretend to drink from a bottle. Is it inappropriate only because it insinuates that a boob is out? *gasp* Babies nurse, when they can’t they get bottles. They pee and they poop. One is just as natural as the other.

I would buy this IF I thought $90 was a good price for a doll.

  5. So, how many of you people are actually breastfeeding moms? If you were you probably wouldn’t think it is a problem encouraging play that reminds a child how natural breastfeeding is. You certainly wouldn’t have a problem letting a child feed a plastic bottle to a baby doll which reinforces that babies should be fed with bottles instead of breasts. The US has created breasts to be simply sexual objects instead of them being for what nature intended– to feed babies. Get a grip and get back to nature. Breastfeeding is best and every doctor or practitioner around the world will tell you that. Let children imprint this idea from early on so that we can get away from feeding babies toxic commercial formula!
