Should You Test Your Tot for Autism?

By Stacy Whitman

Early detection of autism can make a world of difference in the treatment of kids with the mysterious brain disorder—and a simple five-minute screening test could help doctors spot it in babies as young as 12 months. In a study published in the Journal of Pediatrics, more than 10,000 infants were evaluated for signs of autism at their one-year check-up. Of the 184 kids who did not pass the test, 75 percent were later found to have some type of problem and 17 percent ended up being diagnosed with autism. As a result of the early screening, all were able to start treatment by about 19 months of age—years sooner than the average autistic child.

The bottom line: While more studies are needed before they become standard practice, early autism tests may be on the horizon. In the meantime, talk to your pediatrician if you see warning signs such as lack of eye contact and no big smiles.

  1. There are over 200 independent studies done by well-credentialed experts that raise serious concerns about vaccine side effects shown on The Greater Good website.

  2. Why should we believe that an ever-expanding, untested, one-size-fits all vaccine schedule is fine for every child? http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/downloads/child/0-6yrs-schedule-pr.pdf
This link shows the dramatic increase in the number of vaccines our children receive between 1983 and 2012. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-arqv6t8VacY/T7QvOcTrpmI/AAAAAAAAD-U/EBqU4n3R0SE/s1600/VaxCDC.png
Where is even one study on the cumulative effect of the increasing number of vaccines in the childhood schedule? THERE ISN'T ONE.

  3. The message here is that autism is inevitable and all we can do is diagnose it earlier. In truth the autism rate comes from studies of eight year olds, not eighty year olds. No one has ever found a comparable rate among adults, especially adults with classic autism whose symptoms are undeniable. That simple fact should be scaring us all. Something is dramatically impacting the health of our children and we need to stop the epidemic. Countless thousands of children reported to be fine until they received certain routine vaccines. Doctors discount a link and they have lots of studies—all linked to the vaccine makers—showing no link.

  4. What’s really happening here? We’re not told that the U.S. autism rate is a jaw-dropping one in every 88 children, one in every 54 boys. Officially autism has no known cause or cure. It sounds like the medical community has given up on ever knowing anything for sure about autism. There’s nothing a mainstream doctor can tell a new mom so that her baby that was born healthy and is developing normally doesn’t also end up on the autism spectrum by age two.

  5. You know what just SLAYS me? The lackadaisical interest from the media outlets – like an autism diagnosis or even assessment is somewhat fashionable now days! There are SO many news outlets writing and/or publishing articles – but they have zero concern about WHY this happening. It's like autism is gaining some kind of popularity, or it's so much more common that it's just another area of interest that will attract readers. Autism sells? What the F! When my gorgeous son was diagnosed only 15 years ago – NOBODY had really heard of AUTISM in my circles. It is worrisome how the media is hazing the public to accept the heinous reality that our children are being mutilated at the hands of the CDC and AAP.

  6. Research has shown a link between autism and mitochondrial dysfunction which is a problem with cellular energy metabolism unfortunately kids dxed with autism are not often screen for an underlying mitochondrial problem. Also children with autism may present with comorbid conditions like GI problems, dysbiosis in the gut and brain, immune dysfunction.

  7. Wendy, they all promote early diagnosing because THAT'S ALL THEY HAVE!
