Preventing SIDS
by Elizabeth Parker

The number of cases of sudden infant death syndrome has dropped by about 50 percent since 1994, when the "Back to Sleep" campaign was launched by the SIDS Alliance. Over the past decade, experts have discovered even more ways to keep a baby safe. It's very important to make sure that everyone who cares for your baby-babysitter, grandparent, daycare worker-knows this information.
  • Always put your baby to sleep on her back on a firm mattress, with a tight-fitting crib sheet. Make sure your caregiver knows that this is what you want.
  • Keep your baby away from all cigarette smoke.
  • Do not overheat your baby with too many blankets or too much clothing.
  • Keep all blankets, quilts, pillows, and other soft bedding out of the crib.
  • Do not put your baby down on a flexible surface such as a waterbed, beanbag pillow, or shag rug.
  • Keep your baby's face clear of all blankets and never use them as a sunscreen.
  • Allow your baby to be on her tummy every day so that she can strengthen her neck muscles.
