Infants treated with antibiotics in their first six months are 1.5 times more
likely to have allergies and 2.6 times more likely to have asthma by age 7 than
those who receive no antibiotics, found a study from the Henry Ford Health System
in Detroit. The risk is even greater if no pets are in the home and the mother
has similar conditions. On the other hand, "antibiotics can save lives and should
be administered when necessary," says Christine Cole Johnson, Ph.D., senior
research epidemiologist. If your infant needs antibiotics, watch for the
development of allergic conditions.
