Car Safety
by Elizabeth Parker

Installing a car seat properly is critical. Here's how to make certain that you get it right.

Car seats, when properly installed and children are correctly harnessed in them, can save lives - which is why the law dictates that a parent can't take a new baby out of the hospital without one. But while car seats have become stronger, safer, and easier than ever to install, the disturbing fact remains that 82 percent of infant and toddler seats are used incorrectly, says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, leaving babies vulnerable to injury.

To keep your baby safe, look for a car seat that works best in the car you'll be using it in. Consult that car's instruction manual, and try a variety of car seats in the car to find the most compatible one. Make sure you buy a seat intended for your child's age, and read its instruction manual.

Next, visit usa.safekids.org or call (877) 366-8154 to locate a local child passenger safety technician trained by the Safe Kids Worldwide organization, who will show you the best way to install your car seat in your vehicle at no charge. Safe Kids Buckle Up - a program of Safe Kids Worldwide sponsored by GM and Chevrolet - has inspected nearly 700,000 car seats and given hands-on training to more than 9 million parents and caregivers.

No general instructions exist for all cars and car seats, so consulting a trained expert is the best way to ensure your child's safety.
