Umbilical Cord and Circumcision Care
by M.J. Horowitz

"Studies have shown no difference in the length of time it takes for the cord to fall off, whether you use alcohol or not," says Ari Brown, M.D. "However, from a practical standpoint, the alcohol will keep the cord from getting stinky and gross." She recommends wiping the base of the cord three to four times a day while changing diapers.

"For circumcision care, parents should generally follow the instructions of the physician (or mohel, in the Jewish religion) who performed the circumcision," says Anthony Mancini, M.D. "Gentle cleansing with a gentle soap and water should be done after each bowel movement, and if there is any creamy white debris, it should be gently cleaned away. The area should be patted dry and a greasy ointment applied." There will be some discomfort for a week or two and the penis will look red. Signs of infection - for which you should consult a doctor - include increased redness, swelling, foul odor, or a new discharge.
